Recovery from Sprained Knee and Jammed Toe

I've been wanting to write this post for a while, but always put it off because I wasn't actively thinking of my injuries anymore. This is mainly for all the people who wind up here searching for injured knee or toe. Older posts (1, 2, 3) mention how I got hurt and what I was doing about it. But this post is about the recovery.

I strained/sprained(?) my knee some weeks into starting Taekwondo. For about three weeks it felt 'out of joint' (whatever that means), it hurt and twinged while walking on it, and would get worse when I went to class. I combined trying to rest and journalling about my anxieties at that time regarding my knee and other things going on in life. The pain gradually started subsiding after three weeks and I missed only 1 or 2 classes because of it, because I used to force myself to go, really. Two things: at the time it was getting better, I jammed my toe and promptly the residual knee pain disappeared as I was totally focussed on and terribly worried about my toe. Second, looking back, the recovery was speeded up when I stopped obsessing about when I'd be able to participate properly in class. I'm also glad I tried to go to class and do what I could. This wasn't without anxiety: the worry of making it worse, the worry of telling my teacher that I couldn't participate fully. In hindsight, I think being active helped.

At this point I jammed my toe while one-step sparring one night. It subsided in two to three weeks. Close to two weeks after the incident, I had to travel to San Francisco, and spent an afternoon walking around Chinatown, without any ill effects. After this, recovery was almost immediate. Going to class was certainly worry inducing. I was most afraid of it being smooshed by someone again, or delaying the recovery. Again, though it didn't seem so easy then, in hindsight, it helped to keep going to class. As time progressed, I noticed that my toe felt less and less worse after a class. This definitely increased my confidence about it getting better.

Oh...and though I rested and iced and elevated initially, I didn't continue after a few days, and I did no other physical therapy than trying to keep going to class, and trying to keep up my daily routine.

I broke my foot in two places when I was nine. I broke the long bones (metatarsals maybe?) of my pinky toe and middle toe doing a cartwheel.

For some reason, I had an intense fear of rebreaking my foot in class doing a jumping double roundhouse kick.

Then I was asked to a handstand. O.O Fear of that kick was replaced by fear of handstands...

At any rate--glad to hear you're better!

Ugghh, fear is something I've got to figure out how to get over and I can sympathise with your anxiety.

I'm applying for jobs and am in the last year of my grad work. Whenever I get hit now during sparring, I immediately imagine myself going gap-toothed to an interview, or unable to work for months because of a broken arm or something. It really makes me want to quit to be honest. Many of my peers consider it foolhardy for me to be spending time and effort on TKD at this point when I am not at all sure of coming through injury-free and so much other 'important' stuff is going on.

Anonymous said...

Sorry if this comes across too strongly but about your peers thinking you're foolhardy--give me a break. "'Important' stuff?"

People use that as an excuse. They want to do X, Y, Z. They think they want it, or they want OTHER people to think they want it. But deep down they're too scared, they're insecure, or it's not really what THEY want.

So they use "I'm too busy," or "the timing isn't right," or whatever as an excuse. They act like their "important" things are temporary and will be ending soon. And then, then they'll really live! After the important stuff! No, buddy, sorry isn't going to happe, unless, perhaps, you're talking about being very close to retirement. But then you often hear the "I'm too old" excuse.

I wanted to live abroad for years. But I kept putting it off, using school, grad school, work, and/or relationships as an excuse. Really, as much as I wanted to live elsewhere, I was terrified. Using my "important stuff" as an excuse was a way to convince myself (and others) that it wasn't my own fear that was holding me back.

Being here I often get "I wish I could be as brave as you. I just can't do it." Or "I'd like to travel like you do but I can't because I have [kids/work/school/a husband/etc]." Pshaw. If you REALLY wanted to do something, you'd make it work.

I also get the "we're jealous so we're going to [ignore you/pretend you don't exist/tell you how stupid you are to be living 50 miles from North Korea]" syndrome. I have to wonder if some of your peers don't have that going on.

I broke my middle finger closing a CAR DOOR once. Are your peers not anywhere near cars? In Minnesota, slipping on ice was a common winter injury. Don't tell me your peers stay home everyday? Exercising makes your body stronger and makes you less prone to the most common, every day injuries--including heart disease, which is a leading cause of death in the States. If you get out of bed, you're "not at all sure of coming through injury-free."

If you live your life in fear of every possible negative outcome, you miss out on every possible positive outcome.

Woah, that was a nice message from Amanda.

Thank you for your kind comment.

Three weeks, huh? I can barely walk for now. Going up and down stairs is really painful. Honestly, I have no idea when I'll be able to do something good with that knee. Three weeks? Heck, I'd be happy!

I never got hurt before in martial arts. Trough whichever art I was and in a year, I broke a rib, a finger and now, my knee won't work. Maybe it's karma showing it's face? :)

anyways, good blog, I'll be around.

Little Cricket said...

Amanda,

Hmmm...couldn't make out if you were displeased at me or my friends :)

I agree with you that the 'important' stuff always feels temporary, and you feel like saying...ok, once I've got this done...*then* I'll do X. Believe me, it was a rather amazing thing/big step (for me) to start TKD and continue as long as I have. All my life so far has been about nothing but academics 24/7.

Of course one takes risks everyday, but sometimes when injuries from TKD have had me unable to go to school to work with somebody, I have definitely resented it (the fact that I injured myself through an activity I chose to pursue). Regarding exercise, before TKD, I would just run for 40 min everyday, never any hassles.

--

Mat,

Thanks for stopping by!

No injuries! You must have done something right to not get hurt before. Sometimes I feel that my injuries come from inattention or being out of condition, but I need to figure out how to make use of this to not get injured. :D

Anonymous said...

Frustrated with your friends, not you. Heck, frustrated with my own extended family members. ^^

My point is, you've already waited nine years to do this, based on your blog header. In all likelihood, you're not going to get an injury that's going to prevent you from being able to get a job. And if your teeth get chipped, the dentist can fix that. ^^

But I could be wrong--what are you going to grad school for?

I ran, loved it. Even ran a half marathon, and then out of the blue I got so much pain in my right knee that I had to hold onto things to lower myself into a sitting position. Walking up and down stairs was excruciating. No amount of expensive custom-orthotics helped.

I had to give up running. I know that running (combined with super flat feet and healed broken toes) is what screwed up my knees, but I don't resent running. Heck, if it weren't for that injury, I probably wouldn't've come back to TKD.

But no, I wasn't upset with you, just with peers trying to judge foolhardiness. And no, it's not lost on me that I am in turn judging your peers. Ha ha ha!

Little Cricket said...

At the root of it, my problems are because I worry too much. I worry that I won't produce enough research unless I spend most of my time on it. I worry about not being able to go to an interview out of town if my knee were to get hurt badly, etc. etc. I am also vain, and don't want to have teeth knocked out :D.

That's bad that your knee problems forced you to give up running. But how do you reconcile being able to run around for TKD?

Before I knew about how psychosomatic pain could work, my knee did flare up once in a while, (nothing as excruciating as what you are describing). Coincidentally, I haven't had any knee trouble due to running since.
My view is that it was due all the scary stuff that is recited to us ... don't run on concrete, running is bad for your knees, you should do elliptical instead...and on and on. Now that I no longer believe any of these have much truth to them, I am far better off.

Anonymous said...

Well then, you just need to believe that you won't get hurt in taekwondo. ^^

I was doing everything right. My shoes were perfect for me, I didn't run only on concrete, I didn't run on just one side of the road, I slowly increased distance, I cut back on distance every few weeks...

Running in taekwondo is primarily short distances and for short periods of time. I hate sprinting and I'm the slowest person in the studio during our sprinting drills (I have often had to do extra squats or pushups because of it!). It's short enough distances that it doesn't hurt my knees. Interestingly, jumping rope doesn't hurt my knees at all.

I waited for that knee to be healed and slowly restarted my running and it still killed me. Maybe now, years out, I'd be able to do it, but I don't even consider it. I'm much more into taekwondo than I was ever into running.

Little Cricket said...

No, I meant the scary stuff they tell you causes you to be *afraid* that your knees will hurt, and hence they do. Its not that I believe any of those things are actually bad.

Yes, it definitely helps to believe hard that I won't get hurt. It would also help if my sparring partners showed a bit of control and didn't sock me on the face with full force every once in a while.

Anonymous said...

No, I understand. I was trying to point out that it wasn't psychosomatic pain. It was real pain.

::
It would also help if my sparring partners showed a bit of control and didn't sock me on the face with full force every once in a while.
::

Indeed. I am guilty of lacking control sometimes, however. I once side-kicked a guy really good in the ribs. A few days later he sparred me in one of my belt tests. He left a weird bruise on my upperarm that stuck around for about 2 weeks...

Little Cricket said...

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant.

In general though, I do want to emphasise that psychosomatic pain *is* real, if by real one means that there is a physiological reason for the pain. In psychosomatic pain, a physiological process (which causes pain) is triggered by the brain due to psychological causes.

I'm so glad to read all this. I just hurt my knee practicing Taekwondo and I'm feeling so much guilt because my injury occurred while doing something I enjoy and that I chose to do. I guess it's better to hurt yourself at work?? Whatever..., After telling my family about how bad I felt, they told me that the things I like to do are important, too. Our hobbies are part of who we are and they make us more interesting people. To the people who really care about you, it won't matter how you hurt yourself, they just want to help you get better.

Little Cricket said...

Anonymous,

I'm so glad you felt better on reading. Nobody deserves to feel any guilt over getting injured! Indeed work is not everything in life. Get well soon. A hug for you.
