Capoeira and Kalaripayattu

Someday, I want to learn how to do this.

Capoeira was a martial art developed by African slaves in Brazil. Its practice was outlawed by the colonials, and so to disguise the martial aspect, they made the actions look more dance-like. That seemed to have fooled the villainous colonizers!

The sport is non contact and sparring is done surrounded by a circle of the other artists who clap, sing and play drums! They seem to be very good at doing the spinning kicks I have trouble with. In fact most of the kicks seem to involve spinning. A person I know taking a class said that the first thing you practice is cartwheels.

While I'm on the subject of other martial arts, here is a video of the Indian martial art Kalaripayattu. Its a fairly ancient art.

It seems to be practiced almost exclusively in the southern part of India, and is even popular there. But growing up in northern India, I had no exposure to it at all. (Taekwondo and Karate are the most widely learnt martial arts in India) Here is an interesting article on the state of traditional martial arts in India. I had no idea for example that the Kalari martial art was intricately related to the traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda, Indian classical dance forms and Yoga. By way of that article, I found this nicely written and detailed article on the practice of Kalari.

Cool posts... appreciate your journey s I went back to your previous posts and how you got started... many similarities to my beginnings.

But this is more in repsonse to the article you noted under the ancient Indian arts. Basically many think that all Asian arts trace their origins to the Indian arts.

But there is also the notion of the development of medical knowledge having its origin in martial arts as well. the Samurai felt this for sure and they have battle field healing arts called kappo and kojutsu.

The Chinese sya that acupuncture developed because of observations as to the consequences to individuals related to wspecifically where they had been penetrated with arrows!

Keep up the training! And blogging!!

Hi yonjuhachi ronin,

Thanks for visiting, and for understanding about my journey.

It is indeed very believable that these systems of medicines had their origins in martial art. I imagine there has been a lot of cross-pollination in Asia, and hence many different cultures converged onto the similar notions of prana, chi and so on.

After starting martial art, I have suddenly realized there is a now a wholly orthogonal world of knowledge open to me from what I have been learning till now.

There are more things in heaven and earth, Little Cricket, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.

Or as Joyce said... "The West shall shake the East awake!"

So is prana, ki, chi equivalent to libido? In contrast doesn't it seem to be such a shallower understanding?

Rather than ortagonal I wonder if it is in parallel but there was just the slightest mathematical glich so after a few millenia they are actually beginning to touch!

YR,

I am completely out of my depth, so correct me if I am wrong. Weren't Jung and Freud also influenced by Eastern thought?

I made the statement above, because I thought in your comment you were saying something about eastern vs. western philosophy? I also didn't get what you meant by the sentence 'in contrast doesn't it seem to be a shallower understanding'.....which one is shallower? Sorry for being dense!

I should have been clearer:

I didn't mean orthogonal as in east vs. west. I meant that the knowledge which I have accumulated so far is not of a philosophical or spiritual kind. By training I am a mathematician. Though mathematics has philosophical questions at its core, I have focussed only on my capability to solve problems set in the framework of an unambiguous set of axioms where everything has a precise meaning. Which seem orthogonal (to me) to the philosophical questions like...'what is the purpose of learning martial art' or 'what is the way of the warrior' etc.

Sorry... it's me who is unclear and out of my depth...

Deduced you had a background in mathematics based on the vocabulary... rare to hear/see the term 'orthogonol' which in my limited way believed it to mean 'perpendicular' or at a right angle. That's why I stuck with the conceptualization and envisioned east and west as on 'parallel' courses almost destined never to touch. But even the slightest deviation from true parallel, with enough time, will eventually result in a connection. And so continuing with this metaphor... what I meant was that east and west seem to be connecting in this time... our time.

Yes, Jung was dramatically affected by eastern thought... don't know precisely but not so much Freud. These two had friction and ultimately a rift over these ideas.

I was contrasting the shallow notion of libido as human energy so limited to sexual drive, versus the Asian notions of prana, ki, chi which is extremely diverse and complex in the smae way that Hindu have multiple words that describe the concept of infinity (whereas we have only one... I think you would know this better as a mathematician) and/or eskimos have hundreds of words for snow!

Did mathematics as a philosophical quest end with Pythagoras? Isn't there room for chance and randomness in the context of ideas such as those in physics like string theory? Aren't economistss always trying to erive mathematical models for complex human behavior?

I'm way past my prime do even think of learning that but I'll bet my daughter could.

Miss Chris,

Never say never! I think your daughter would have fun learning. I saw some videos with girls in them, they looked awesome!

YR,

The philosophical quest of course did not end with Pythagoras. Godel carried it on into the 20th century.

Nevertheless, its not from thinking about philosophical questions that the average person earns their bread and butter :)
