to shake off my gloomy thoughts and go down to the local chain bookstore at 10 in the night. I'd gone wanting to find books like Mark and Delia Owens' Cry of the Kalahari, which I had found very engaging, but the store didn't have much of a 'nature/ nature ecology' section, which was what that book was classified under.
Randomly, I found myself in the martial arts section. I ended up going home with Joe Hyams' Zen in the Martial Arts and finished it by midnight. I liked the story of the karate instructor who speeds the healing of his badly fractured hand by visualizing little construction workers working on his hand as he went to bed every night. I liked the small reminders scattered throughout the book like
'The less effort, the faster and more powerful you will be.'-Bruce Lee.
which gave me the resolve (I hope) to practice without unnecessary straining. And I liked the reminder about the distinction between having patience -- having the capacity to endure setbacks calmly -- and giving yourself time -- working towards a goal without setting a limit on how long it will take. These are things that we all 'know' but its good to remind oneself and to think about them.

Zen in the Martial Arts - I've read that one. Joe Hyams co-wrote at least one book with Chuck Norris. Norris has a book on Zen as well. I've always gravitated towards reading martial philosophy over books on technique.
How about the tao of jeet kune do?
It's good. Seriously.
John,
I had never heard of Chuck Norris
before I got into taekwondo. Seems like an interesting character. I've read that he's become religious.

Mat,
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll try jeet kune do. I saw a couple in the 'tao of ' series by Bruce Lee at the store, but couldn't decide out of them.
For example, I didn't know that Chuck Norris *can* divide by zero.
And that Chuck Norris counted to infinity, twice.
Those have got to be my favorite facts :D
GREAT book. I am happy you found it. I read it years ago and have a very worn and often referenced copy of it at the gym. I have given it to many of my students as a gift.
Interesting trivia, I met a Taekwondo instructor in Korea who had it translated into the Korean language as well.
By the way:
"When the bogey man goes to bed at night, he checks his closet for Chuck Norris."
Gordon,
It is a good book to have.
By the way, the videos on your last post on tornado kick were very helpful to me, your blog is a really good resource.
You "randomly" found yourself there? That's the first place I head to, usually followed by the science/math books section. ^^
Tao of Jeet Kune Do is very good, as is the extra-notes version that John Little edited.
Although I head to the martial arts section first, I'm generally not very impressed and wonder if I'm the only one.
I have not read the other tao of series.
Tao of kung fu might be interesting. But I thought, why not go with the result of years of learning instead of the process?
Although I sure they are interesting reads, MA researchers often go in wrong directions and only later realize that.
Reading about such things influenced my own training...
Enjoy the books.
"Chuck Norris gave Mona Lisa that smile." That's his "secret weapon".
"Chuck Norris roundhouse kicks don't really kill people. They wipe out their entire existence from the space-time continuum."
Love that website :D
I wish that the libraries would hold good MA books. Instead, I often find myself reading a book by a world champion with nothing new or of real interest to read. Plus, these books are expensive!!
be well.
Amanda,
Yup, randomly. I'm haven't been in the habit of reading MA books.

Mat,
Yeah, some of the nicely bound books on budo were rather pricey! I like how you sign off 'be well', it cheers me up.

Thanks! I am so glad you find it useful. That is my hope.
